The dog’s jaw may become paralyzed or drop, and excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth may occur. The dog may hide away and avoid interaction. This form is less obviously aggressive but equally dangerous because the virus is still present in the saliva.

Diagnosis of Rabies

Rabies can only be diagnosed by direct examination of brain tissue, making it impossible to definitively diagnose the disease in a living animal. There are no conclusive tests that can definitively confirm rabies while a dog is alive, although veterinarians may test hair follicles, saliva, blood serum, and spinal fluid for signs of the rabies virus as supportive indicators.

If there is high suspicion that a dog has rabies, or if a dog showing symptoms of rabies dies suddenly, a veterinarian may recommend submission of appropriate brain samples for laboratory testing. This is particularly important if there has been human exposure to the animal, as this information may be required by public health authorities.

Survival and Post-Exposure Treatment
