Dogs shake for many reasons, ranging from normal behaviors like excitement or feeling cold to serious medical conditions requiring immediate veterinary attention. Understanding the cause helps determine if it’s harmless or a sign of distress.

Normal Reasons Why Dogs Shake

Shaking is often benign and tied to a dog’s emotional or environmental state. These causes typically resolve without intervention.

  • Excitement: Dogs frequently tremble when thrilled, such as during greetings or playtime. This excitement-induced shaking usually subsides quickly.
  • Cold or Wet: Shivering helps dogs generate body heat when chilly or after a bath. Small breeds, puppies, and seniors are more prone due to less insulation.
  • Anxiety or Fear: Stress from thunderstorms, fireworks, vet visits, or separation triggers adrenaline-fueled shaking. It often stops once the stressor passes.

Medical Causes of Dog Shaking

When shaking persists or accompanies other symptoms, it may indicate an underlying health issue. Prompt evaluation is crucial.

Pain or Injury

Dogs in pain from arthritis, injuries, surgery, or internal issues like bloat may shake. Look for limping, whining, appetite loss, or reluctance to move.

Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)

Common in toy breeds, puppies, and diabetics, low blood sugar causes shaking, weakness, vomiting, or seizures. Rub honey on gums en route to the vet for emergencies.

Toxin Ingestion

Substances like xylitol, chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts, antifreeze, or pesticides induce tremors via hypoglycemia or nervous system effects. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse—seek ER care immediately.

Nausea or Stomach Upset

Motion sickness, eating spoiled food, or illnesses cause shaking with drooling, lip-licking, or vomiting.

Addison’s Disease

This adrenal gland disorder leads to cortisol deficiency, causing shaking, weakness, and electrolyte imbalances. It’s more common in certain breeds.

Neurological Disorders

Conditions like distemper (in unvaccinated pups), epilepsy, cerebellar hypoplasia, or shaker syndrome produce tremors. Shaker syndrome responds well to prednisone.

Other Conditions

  • Hypocalcemia: Low calcium triggers muscle tremors.
  • Distemper: Viral infection with tremors, discharge, fever.

When to See a Vet for Dog Shaking

Not all shaking needs a vet, but err on caution. Contact immediately if:

  • Shaking is new, persistent, or severe.
  • Paired with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, disorientation, or collapse.
  • Sudden onset post-eating or toxin exposure.
  • Your dog is a puppy, small breed, or senior.

For non-emergencies like anxiety, try calming aids first, but consult for chronic cases.

How to Help a Shaking Dog

Preventing Shaking in Dogs

  • Maintain routine feeding/exercise to stabilize blood sugar.
  • Secure toxins; use childproofing.
  • Socialize early; desensitize to triggers like thunder.
  • Regular vet checkups for vaccines, seniors.
  • Balanced diet; monitor small breeds closely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is shaking always a sign of something serious in dogs?

No, it can be from excitement or cold, but persistent shaking with symptoms warrants a vet visit.

Why do small dogs shake more?

They have higher surface-to-volume ratios, losing heat faster, plus prone to hypoglycemia.

Can anxiety cause shaking in older dogs?

Yes, cognitive decline or pain from arthritis can mimic or exacerbate anxiety shaking.

How is shaker syndrome treated?

Prednisone suppresses immune response; tremors resolve in 1-2 weeks, maintained on low dose.

What if my dog shakes after eating chocolate?

It’s toxic—rush to ER as it causes tremors, seizures, or death.
